Thirteen people lost their lives in road accidents over the weekend, including six who died as a result of a single collision in west Cork.

This accident happened at around 9.30 p.m. on Saturday night, at Tooreen, Ballinhassig, Co Cork, when two cars collided, killing all but one of the seven occupants.

Two passengers in one car, Denis and Nuala McCarthy, a couple in their 60s from Clonakilty, Co Cork, died and their nephew, who was driving the car, was seriously injured, when the car collided with another car driven by a 23-year old man, Paul O'Donovan.

Mr O'Donovan, from Kinsale, was killed along with his three passengers, all teenagers and all also from Kinsale. They were twin brothers, 15-year-old Cian and Gavin O'Sullivan, and their friend, Conor Coleman. Post-mortems are being carried out and the Garda∅ in Bandon are appealing for witnesses.

A pedestrian, was killed in the early hours of yesterday morning: Mr Anthony Quirke (28) from Coolcullen, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, was fatally injured near Castlecomer in a hit-and-run accident at around 3.45 a.m.

The Garda in Kilkenny have arrested a 16-year-old youth under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Two more accidents in the early hours of Saturday morning brought the total number of deaths to nine. At 12.15 a.m., Ms Catherine Walsh, Graiguecullen, Carlow, was killed when the car in which she was a passenger hit a wall. She was in her early 30s. The accident happened at Rathleash, Portarlington, Co Laois.

Another pedestrian was killed at 2.15 a.m. He was Mr Gerard Doyle, Saggart, Co Dublin, who was hit by a car near Citywest on the Naas dual carriageway. He was 35. A man was arrested and brought to Blanchardstown Garda station.

At Kells, Co Meath, a woman was killed in a three-car collision at 11.10 a.m. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Navan hospital.

A woman (70) who was knocked down on the South Douglas Road in Cork on Saturday died yesterday.

A man was killed in a road accident in Ballymena yesterday.

He was a front-seat passenger in a car which crashed on the Doury Road at around 7 a.m.

Also in the North, a man in his 60s, Mr Charles Patrick McNaughton, Glen Road, Glenariffe, was killed in a single car collision at Cushendall, Co Antrim
