In Clare, a motorist had a lucky escape on Saturday after she pulled onto the hard shoulder from the Newmarket-on-Fergus bypass to answer her mobile.
Her car was struck from behind by an articulated lorry and travelled about 50ft along the hard shoulder before stopping in a grass verge.
The motorist got out of her badly-damaged Vauxhall Cavalier car, but then collapsed and was found in a dazed state.
A passing driver, with first aid training, treated her at the scene while they waited for an ambulance. She was treated in the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for neck and back injuries and shock. Her condition was said to be "comfortable" last night.
"It is incredible that she got out of that car at all," a garda said afterwards. "If there was anyone in the back of the car they would certainly have been killed."
Gardaí in Newmarket-on-Fergus are seeking witness to the accident, and can be contacted on 061 368 172.
