A man in his 20s is due to appear in court at Kilmainham later today, charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident at Dolphin's Barn in Dublin in which an elderly male pedestrian was killed.
This followed a weekend when three people died in separate road traffic incidents.
Gardaí at Kilmainham Garda station are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident in Dolphin's Barn which led to the death of Thomas Kealy (79) of Dolphin House, Dublin. He died after he was struck by a silver Volkswagen Passat at about 3pm on Saturday.
Separately, a young male driver of a black Honda Civic car, which was reported stolen to Dublin gardaí early on Saturday morning, has also died. The car crashed into a street light and parking meter in Fairview. The man in his 20s died after the car went out of control at Annesley Bridge shortly after 8am on Saturday. A young female passenger remained in intensive care at the Mater hospital last night.
Two other women received minor injuries and have been released from hospital.
A spokesman for the Garda Press Office said the car had been reported stolen and had "come to Garda attention" before crashing. It is understood gardaí had been pursuing it earlier in the morning, after it was stolen from an address at Spencer Street.
The third victim was a woman killed by a lorry while she was crossing the road at Duke Street in Athy at about 11.30am on Saturday. She has been named by gardaí as Mary Foley (68), Michael Dooley Terrace, Athy, Co Kildare.
