Four children had a lucky escape after becoming trapped on a small island by a rising tide in Galway Bay yesterday.

The 10-year-old and three teenagers were with their father when they got into difficulty. The father swam ashore to raise the alarm and an Irish Coastguard helicopter and the Galway RNLI Lifeboat raced to the scene.

The incident happened on Rine Island near Ballyvaughan, Co Clare.

A crew member was lowered on to the island from the rescue helicopter and assisted the children who were taken to the quay at Ballyvaughan by the lifeboat.

Galway Lifeboat operations manager Mike Swan said: “Both rescue services pulled out all the stops and were on the scene within minutes to divert what could have been a tragedy.”
