Tory MP Mr Peter Bottomley said he believed the Conservative Party would be the first to have a black or Asian prime minister.
He accused Labour activists of "over-enthusiastic" campaigning against a Tory general election candidate from an ethnic minority.
"The colour of my skin should be as important as the colour of my eyes or the colour of my hair - something you may notice but doesn't tell you any more about me," he told the BBC Radio 4 Todayprogramme.
"I suspect that in the same way that the Conservative Party was the first party to have a prime minister of Jewish background, the first party to have a woman, we're quite likely to be the first to have a prominent black or Asian politician as our prime minister.
"It's likely to be one of the people elected at this election.
"In some of the places where we have very good British black or Asian candidates some of the local Labour people are saying 'don't vote for them you know the Tories have got someone black or Asian'.
"Racism has been everywhere and need be nowhere. If we treat people fairly they won't mind if they are chosen or not chosen, elected or not elected, whether they are white or black or Asian."
