Robbie Keane believes Tottenham Hotspur should have extended Teddy Sheringham's contract at the club and kept him for another season.

Keane, the club's top scorer in the Premiership this season, says his 37-year-old strike partner still has plenty to offer in the top flight.

Speaking today from the Republic of Ireland's training camp, the Dubliner expressed his shock at the decision.

"I was very surprised," he said. "Teddy's a brilliant player and although he's old, the experience that he has and the way he plays was good for us."

"I personally would have kept him for another season but that's not my decision."

The club confirmed a few weeks ago that they would not be renewing Sheringham's contract when it expires in the summer.

Keane could soon find himself linking up with Bobby Zamora as boss Glenn Hoddle is reportedly lining up a bid to lure the Brighton striker to White Hart Lane.

"Bobby's a brilliant player and has scored some goals for Brighton," observed Keane. "I haven't seen him play much over the last few years but his record speaks for itself."
