Five officers of Spain's Civil Guard police died today and two others were seriously injured when a truck crashed into their checkpoint early this morning.
The truck driver apparently fell asleep and was only slightly injured in the crash, which took place around 70 kilometres north of Madrid.
The checkpoint had been set up to provide extra security for the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security that starts today to mark the first anniversary of last year's train bombings that killed 191 people in Madrid.
