Rome - Italy's Supreme Court of Appeal yesterday rejected a Turkish attempt to overturn a ruling that released a Kurdish rebel leader, Mr Abdullah Ocalan, from house arrest in Rome.

Lawyers for Turkey, which wants to have Mr Ocalan extradited to face terrorism charges, had contested a decision made by the Court of Appeal. Mr Ocalan is head of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara says has caused 30,000 deaths in its campaign for a separate Kurdish state.
