Two people have died on the State's roads in separate crashes.

A 58-year-old man died after he was hit by a car in Co Leitrim. The collision happened at Tomrud, Manorhamilton at 9.55pm last night.

The man's body was removed to Sligo General Hospital. A Garda statement said the scene is currently preserved for technical examination and the N16 from Tomrud to Shanvaus will remain closed until approximately 3pm this afternoon.

Gardaí appealed for any witnesses to contact Manorhamilton Garda station.

A woman in her 80s died in a crash on the Cork-Kerry border yesterday evening. She was a passenger in a car involved in a collision about a kilometre on the Mallow side of Rathmore at 5.20pm.

Today, gardaí are investigating another serious road crash on the Cavan bypass in Cavan.

Two cars collided at 10pm last night. Eight people were removed to Cavan General Hospital with various injuries, a Garda statement said.

The scene of the accident was preserved and the road was closed in both directions between the Dublin road turn-off and the Cootehill turn-off. It has now been re-opened.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have been driving on the Cavan bypass at the time of the crash to contact Cavan Garda station.

The name of a man killed in a crash in Youghal, Co Cork on Thursday was also released by gardaí today. He was Kevin Sexton (60) from Oak Hill, Youghal.
