In Dublin, a woman in her 80s was killed following a three-car collision at High Rock on the Coast Road, Malahide, at about 9.45am. The woman, who was driving one of the three cars involved, was brought to Beaumont Hospital but later died from her injuries.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was being detained at Malahide Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Gardaí said last night that he would appear in Dublin District Court this morning to be charged in connection with the crash.

Nobody else was injured in the incident.

The Coast Road between Portmarnock and Malahide was sealed off for a time to allow an an investigation by gardaí.

In Ardee, a pedestrian in his 70s was killed when he was struck by a car shortly after 11am while crossing the Ardee to Kells road, about three kilometres from town.

The man's body was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth.

Gardaí in Ardee are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

They are especially interested in talking to the driver of a silver coloured articulated lorry, registered in the North, who they believe may be able to assist in the investigation.

The man is the third person and second pedestrian to be killed on the roads in 2007, following the death of 18-year-old Paul McGann, from Theur, Riverstown, Co Sligo. He died after he was hit by a car on the Mail Coach Road, Sligo, in the early hours of New Year's Day.
