Gardaí are continuing to question two men who fired a shotgun at officers when they were challenged in Co Tipperary.

The men were spotted at around 3 am acting suspiciously in a car in Killbragh in Fethard, 10 miles north of Clonmel, by gardaí on patrol.

When they were challenged, they fired a shot at them and drove off in the car.

A Garda spokesman said they crashed the car shortly afterwards and were tracked down by gardaí. No officers were injured.

"One of them had a shotgun and one of them had a knife. They threatened gardaí, but they were disarmed and arrested," he said.

Both men are in their early 20s and from Co Tipperary. They are being detained at Clonmel Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
