Two held in Limerick incident

Gardaí in Limerick fired shots when a car failed to stop for them in Limerick this evening.

A Garda spokesman said the incident occurred at about 4.30pm on the Dooradoyle Road.

Two Garda cars were damaged and a Garda member was injured in the incident, the spokesman added.

The injured member was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital for observation.

Gardaí discharged "a number of shots" in the course of the incident.

Two men have been arrested. A man in his late 20s is being questioned at Henry Street Garda station. The other man, who is in his mid-30s, is being held at Roxboro Road.

Both are being detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The scene of the incident is being preserved for technical examination.

The Garda spokesman said the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has been notified.
