The collision, between a car and a truck, occured at 5.15pm at Castleconnell on the main N7 Limerick to Dublin road, between Birdhill and Finnegan's roundabout, about one mile north of Daly's Cross.

The two men, a driver and front-seat passenger, were killed instantly when the Toyota Corolla in which they were travelling collided with a lorry.

The car was very badly damaged in the crash.

One of the men is believed to be in his 40s, while the other is understood to be in his 20s.

Both are from the Limerick area and are believed to be related.

Emergency services arrived at the scene of the crash within minutes, including two fire engines and two ambulances.

The two men, who were pronounced dead at the scene, were removed to Limerick regional hospital yesterday evening.

The driver of the truck was uninjured.

Last night gardaí were carrying out extensive inspections at the location of the incident.

A section of the road remained closed until late last night, with considerable traffic jams and diversions in place.

Gardaí in Henry Street, Limerick are conducting the investigation.

The deaths bring to 322 the number of fatalities on the State's roads in 2007.

On Thursday evening a 27-year-old man was killed and two teenagers were injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a car at Gurteen, Slieverue, Co Kilkenny.

The incident occured at 7.20pm and the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Named locally as Kenneth Scannell, of Curraghmore, Slieverue, he died instantly in the collision.

The two occupants of the car, a man and woman in their late teens, were seriously injured and removed by ambulance to Waterford Regional Hospital.

The woman was released from hospital yesterday, while the man was said to be "recovering".

The road which connects the main New Ross to Waterford Road to Waterford Port was closed for some time after the incident.
