Two men were killed in road crashes in Dublin and Louth over the weekend.
A man died when he was struck by a car in Lucan in the early hours of Sunday.
He was walking on Main Street in Lucan village when the incident occurred at around 5am.
Gardaí and an ambulance attended the scene, and the man, in his 20s, was taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown. However, he died there at around 7.30am.
The site of the crash was sealed off for technical examination yesterday, and the car involved in the collision was seized for examination.
A postmortem was also carried out yesterday by the State pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy. Gardaí in Lucan are investigating the cause of the crash, and have called for witnesses to contact them.
In Co Louth a man died when the lorry he was driving went out of control. Michael Kelly (48), Grange Drive, Muirhevnamore, Dundalk, was killed at 7.45am on Saturday when the lorry he was driving crashed on the R173, the main Dundalk to Carlingford road, at Ballymacelligott, Dundalk. He was the only person in the lorry, and there were no other vehicles involved.
Gardaí and an ambulance were in attendance, and Mr Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene. He was then taken to Louth County Hospital. The road was closed for some hours for technical examination. Gardaí at Dundalk Garda station are investigating, and have asked witnesses to contact them.
Meanwhile, a member of Ireland's 2004 Olympic equestrian squad in Athens has been seriously injured in a car crash.
Edmond Gibney (32), Kells, Co Meath, who competed in the individual competition in the 2004 Olympic three-day event, suffered severe head injuries in a car crash in the south of England on Saturday night.
He was taken to Southampton General Hospital in Hampshire after being involved in a collision on a narrow bridge. He is in a critical condition in the hospital's neurological intensive care unit.
His mother, Delores Gibney, and his brother, Thomas, have flown to England to be at his bedside. They have been joined by his sister Louise, who is based in Britain.
