Two new Assistant Chief Constables have been appointed by the North's Policing Board. Chief Supt Duncan McCausland (43) and Chief Supt Roy Toner (40) were among six shortlisted candidates interviewed on Tuesday by a Policing Board subcommittee.
Both Mr McCausland and Mr Toner are serving PSNI officers and they will bring to six the number of Assistant Chief Constables under the leadership of Mr Hugh Orde, expected to take up his position as the new Chief Constable on September 1st, and the acting Chief Constable, Mr Colin Cramphorn.
Mr Orde attended the selection process and was accompanied by Mr Dan Crompton, a member of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Constabulary.
The appointments had been help up temporarily pending legal advice following a judgment in a recent Fair Employment Tribunal Case in which Sir Ronnie Flanagan, the former Chief Constable, was named.
Mr McCausland has served 19 years with the PSNI and the RUC. He is a former Chief Inspector and worked as Head of Policy and Planning at Police Headquarters at Knock, Belfast. He has been Commander of Dungannon, Co Tyrone, sub-division and has acted as Staff Officer to the Chief Constable. Promoted to Chief Superintendent in March, he is Operations Manager for Belfast and is deputy to the Assistant Chief Constable, Belfast.
Mr Toner has served 21 years with the service and holds degrees from the University of Ulster and a diploma from Cambridge. His police career has taken him from Community Affairs to the Complaints and Discipline Department before he was seconded to the Inspectorate of Constabulary where he specialised in race relations. He also had an input into the Patten recommendations on the future of policing in the North.
