Two people have died in a house fire in Drogheda, Co Louth.

Fire services were called to the house on Mill Lane, off Trinity Street, shortly before 1.30 a.m.

Two bodies were discovered in an upstairs room. They were taken to Our lady of Lourdes Hospital where they were pronounced dead a short time later. The dead are understood to be a man (35) and a woman (27).

The house had previously been thought derelict, but neighbours believe a couple had been staying there.

Gardaí have preserved the scene for a forensic examination, but they are not treating the fire as suspicious.
