Potsdam - The British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, sought yesterday to play down the prospect of being left behind in a two-speed Europe, stressing Franco-German plans for a core European Union group were not a threat to Britain.

Before meeting Chancellor Gerhard Schroder outside Berlin, Mr Blair also said Britain wanted to join Europe's single currency, but would do so only if its economic tests for entry were satisfied.
