The US House of Representatives today approved legislation to allow Americans to import prescription drugs from Canada and 24 other industrialised nations.

These medications often sell at a fraction of their US costs.

Backers of the bill said it would give people immediate financial relief from some of the highest drug prices in the world.

But opponents of the move said imports would create safety hazards.
