An aircraft carrying hundreds of US troops made an emergency landing at Shannon airport this morning.

The Trans Air plane, carrying 282 troops and crew, landed at 9.25 a.m. after developing engine problems. A spokeswoman for Aer Rianta said it was forced to shut down number three engine and land at Shannon as a "precautionary measure".

The plane was en route from Baltimore, Washington, to Frankfurt in Germany. It was also forced to dump fuel over the Shannon Estuary.

The spokeswoman said that the troops would remain in the airport building while repairs take place on the engine. The plane is expected to continue its journey later today.
