Curtis Cup:Maybe their pride was wounded, but the United States – who trailed 3.5 to 2.5 overnight – against Britain and Ireland in the 36th Curtis Cup were in no mood to play second best to anyone at Essex County Club on the northern perimeter of Boston in the second session of fourballs today.
In a quite devastating performance, inspired by reigning US women’s amateur champion Jennifer Song in her swansong to the amateur game, the United States took a clean sweep of all the fourballs to move into a 5.5 to 3.5 lead.
Song had nine birdies on her own card as she partnered Cydney Clayton to a 3 and 2 win over the Maguire twins, Lisa and Leona, who were hit by the full brunt of the American fight-back despite mustering six birdies of their own. The 20-year-old
American could do no wrong with the putter, as she almost single-handedly outplayed the Maguires.
Danielle McVeigh and Pamela Pretswell were beaten in the top match by 2 and 1 by Alexis Thompson and Jessica Korda, while the bottom match went to the 18th green where Sally Watson and Rachel Jennings went down to Stephanie Kono and Kimberley Kim by 2 holes.
