Vandals who broke into an ink factory were responsible for turning the Liffey red this week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed.

A break-in at Packaging Inks and Coatings Ltd in the Western Industrial Estate, Dublin resulted in ink being released into the Camac River, a tributary of the Liffey, said Dr Gerry Byrne, programme manager on licensing and control, EPA.

The situation is "under control", said Ms Veronica Cooke, administrative officer, Environmental Services Section, South Dublin County Council, in whose jurisdiction the company is.

Personnel from South Dublin County Council's environmental services section were working in the area on Tuesday and yesterday to clean up the leakage, and they were still monitoring the area, she said.

The EPA is satisfied, at the moment, that the company was not negligent in its environmental duties, although it may draw attention to the company's security practices to ensure a similar situation does not happen again.
