VHI to repay €500,00 to 11,500 customers

Almost 11,500 VHI customers are to receive an average of €37 each after it was discovered they were underpaid for certain treatments received in two Dublin Hospitals between 1996 and 2004.

The discrepancy was discovered following a review by the Health Insurance Authority, the body which monitors the health insurance industry.

An internal review by the VHI found that 11,458 customers who attended the Blackrock Clinic and Mater Private Hospital under Plan A and Plan B were not paid the minimum did not meet State benefit requirements.

The VHI has said it has identified every single member impacted and will be contacted and reimbursed with full interest payment representing an average of €37 each to 11,458 members.

An additional sum, equivalent to deposit interest over the period in question, will also be paid.

Total payment, including interest, amounts to €423,000.

In addition, the VHI has initiated an independent inquiry to investigate how this shortfall originated and why it was not addressed.
