Darts: Former Darts world champion Andy Fordham is expected to remain in hospital "for a few more days" after being taken ill at the Lakeside World Championship.

The 44-year-old, winner of the title in 2004, had to forfeit his first-round match against Australia's Simon Whitlock when it became clear he was unfit to play due to breathing difficulties.

Paramedics and an ambulance were called to the Frimley Green venue and 'The Viking' was taken to the local hospital, where he spent the night in a "stable" condition with a severe chest infection.

It was feared the problem was related to the 26-stone publican's heart, but a British Darts Organisation spokesman onfirmed it was a different organ that had been affected.

"Andy has fluid on his right lung and that will be drained away today," said Holmes. "He will be in hospital for a few more days."

Fordham's withdrawal from the tournament meant Whitlock, who beat him 3-0 in the opening round last year, was given a bye into the last 16 and will face Holland's Niels de Ruiter tomorrow.
