The Offaly town of Birr, a Georgian heritage town, is preparing itself for its renowned annual Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival, which opens this evening.

Shopkeepers and bar staff will don ancient costumes as Birr goes for the historic look, while historical street skits promise a comic take on the region's history.

Festival PRO Janine Wilson said: "This is the 39th year of the festival and it always attracts huge crowds. People come from all over, including Birr people from around the world who come back for the festival.
