Paris - A French magistrate yesterday questioned a former deputy to President Jacques Chirac during his time as Paris mayor about allegations that he helped to send Jews to concentration camps in the second World War.

Sources close to the case said the politician, Mr Michel Junot (83), had denied any role in the deportations and said his duties as a civil servant in Nazi-occupied France did not give him any authority over detention camps for Jews.
