GAA round-up: Westmeath will meet Dublin in the quarter-finals of the O'Byrne Cup after a narrow win over DIT at Cusack Park this afternoon.
Having enjoyed the better of the opening skirmishes, DIT were rocked by goals from Mark Gorman and Dermot Bannon in quick succession to go into the interval 2-4 to 0-7 behind and despite battling gamely after the break were unable to bridge the gap, eventually succumbing 2-8 to 0-12.
Elsewhere in Leinster, Wexford edged out Laois 1-14 to 0-14, a Matty Forde goal proving decisive, while there were also convincing wins for Carlow and Offaly.
In Ulster, Armagh and Tyrone suffered opening day defeats at the hands of Derry and UUJ respectively. Derry ensured new Armagh manager Peter McKenna endured a difficult afternoon, winning 2-9 to 0-6 at Davitt Park, while in Omagh Tyrone suffered a rare Dr McKenna Cup defeat, going down 0-12 to 0-9 to the student side.
