A woman who gave a room to an English visitor and his dog has been named the national winner of the Fáilte Ireland Welcome Awards. Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism John O'Donoghue yesterday presented Stella Lynch from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, with the award for her "extraordinary kindness".
The awards, which have been running for five years, recognise individuals who make an outstanding addition to someone's holiday in Ireland.
Ms Lynch, a bookshop owner, was nominated by Michael Williams from England who had come into her shop and asked her for help in finding accommodation which would accept his dog. She tried to find accommodation but when she failed, offered to put him up for the night.
She also arranged a barbecue so that he could make friends and persuaded her brother to take him to a hurling match.
