The former spokesman for Zimbabwe's main opposition party, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has been found dead in prison.

Zimbabwean state broadcaster ZBC radio did not give details of the death of Mr Learnmore Jongwe, who had been jailed after being accused in July of murdering his wife during a domestic argument.

He denied he intended to kill his wife, who died of injuries sustained during the row.

He stood down from his post in the MDC when he was accused of the murder, and his case was due to come to court next month.

Mr Jongwe was the chief spokesman for the MDC, formed in 1999 and the strongest political challenge to President Mr Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party since Zimbabwe's independence in 1980.
