Student accommodation

A matter of urgency

Sir, – In July 2021, legislation was passed by the Dáil which aimed to ensure that students could give a month’s notice when leaving their student accommodation. This legislation was particularly targeted at the private student accommodation providers whose policy was to charge about 10 months’ rent with no ability for students to simply give one month’s notice and then leave.

However, these private accommodation providers are still informing students that if they leave their accommodation during the year, they must get someone to replace them, or pay the full bill, usually at least ¤10,000.

For some reason, some of these accommodation providers believe that the new law does not apply to them.

The Government needs to urgently revise this legislation so that it is actually effective, and enforce this law.

This needs to be done as a matter of urgency as students are currently booking accommodation. – Yours, etc,
