Sir, – Conor Fitzpatrick (Letters, June 2nd) makes a good point about the need for local authorities to water newly planted trees. Why don’t local residents do their bit by watering such trees planted on the roads outside their houses? It is only for the first year or so and, with the climate becoming drier, there is an increasing risk to young trees. He is quite right that natural watering is not enough in many cases. It is unrealistic to expect the authorities to do it. – Yours, etc,
