Sir, – I note that funding of €1.5 million has been set aside by the Minister for Arts to buy contemporary artwork to fill gaps in the national collection, “Money will be given to the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Crawford Art Gallery”, News, June 13th).
We are told the new fund will reflect topics such as climate change, diversity and global migration and will contribute to thoughtfully and more strategically rebuilding the national collection.
This seems like a very politically motivated and exclusive way of purchasing art on behalf of the nation in this age of inclusivity. Surely the vision of individual artists will in itself reflect diversity and the only criteria which should be applied are those which govern quality.
