Sir, – A few more days of this hot, dry summer weather will surely prompt the powers that be to introduce a nationwide hosepipe ban, and staggered water supply shutdowns.

For it’s now generally accepted that in this green and pleasant land, five consecutive rain-free sunny days constitute a drought! – Yours, etc,
