Sir, – Brian O’Brien offers some interesting analysis of the changes in life expectancy since Bismarck’s time and the inevitable rise in the cost of pensions as a result (Letters, July 26th). However, he then writes that “if there is a “downside to all this upside, it is that retirement ages will have to increase” and that “the Taoiseach is to be commended for drawing attention to this”.
In fact, Mr Martin has rejected the Pension Commission’s proposal to raise the pension age to 67 and then 68 and has guaranteed that it will stay at 66. – Yours, etc,
