Sir, – I think Frank McNally is setting the bar too high in saying he’d be truly incredulous if a Premier League footballer recited a Shakespearean sonnet (An Irishman’s Diary, August 17th).
The sonnet is both a rigid and lengthy poetic form, ill-suited to the soundbites of the breathless post-match interview. Perhaps the shorter format of haiku is more feasible? “I’m over the moon. Hitting the back of the net – unbelievable”. – Yours etc,
