Sir, – I was interested in Erica Devine’s letter of August 22nd concerning the appointment of Dr Caroline Campbell as the first woman director of the National Gallery of Ireland. I would also like to congratulate Dr Campbell on her appointment and look forward to her bringing her extensive experience to the post of NGI director and leading the gallery’s development over the next few years.
While I think the point made by Ms Devine about the Prado and other international galleries is entirely valid, it ignores recent Irish experience in advancing the equality agenda.
With Dr Campbell’s appointment five of the largest public art galleries and art museums in Ireland – the National Gallery of Ireland, Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, the Crawford Gallery in Cork and the Hunt Museum in Limerick – will be led by women. Credit where credit is due.
