Sir, – It was interesting to read Gerry Thornley’s article (Sport, November 3rd) about the different arrangements for drinking at both the Aviva Stadium and Croke Park.
Despite the overwhelming evidence that spectators at the Aviva are fed up with the relentless traffic of drinkers inside the ground, and the suggestion that the Croke Park model should be adopted, whereby nobody can bring booze to their seats, the IRFU chief commercial officer, Padraig Power, is not inclined to imitate the GAA scheme, giving the extraordinary and hilarious reason that Croke Park supporters “are mainly rural who are driving.”
Ah, yes, all those tractors, combine harvesters, jeeps, muck spreaders outside Croke Park on a big match day. I think Mr Power should get out more, or maybe just go to a game in Croke Park, and take notes.
