Sir, – “Military officers group remains unconvinced by Government moves to address staffing crisis and appeals for action to halt exodus” (News, November 28th) highlights the ongoing crisis of retention in the Defence Forces, with total numbers expected to fall to below 8,000 before the year’s end.
The failure by Minister for Defence Simon Coveney to address the crisis of retention, at a time of a deteriorating European security situation, is indeed alarming. With every branch of the Defence Forces under strength and a barely functioning Naval Service, it is hardly a ringing endorsement of his efforts. – Yours, etc,
