A chara, – I was delighted to read that the cigarette companies are at last to be made contribute to the cost of cleaning up the refuse remaining after the sale of their unpleasant product; they have been getting away with it for years (“Tobacco firms to pay for street cleaning under new legislation”, News, December 31st).
The precedent has now been established to oblige the chewing gum manufacturers to follow suit. It is to be hoped that the appropriate legislation will not take as long to be implemented. – Is mise,

Sir, – The answer to littering with cigarette butts and filters is obvious.
Charge extra for the filters, but allow smokers to bring them back to the tobacconist for a refund. Simple. – Yours, etc,
