Sir, – William Reville has brought up the subject of swearing (“Why do we swear so much?”, Science, March 2nd).
One of the joys of going abroad on holiday or on business is that one rarely hears swear words. When I return home via Dublin Airport, I time how long it will be before I overhear an f-word. I usually hear my first one in the immigration queue or at the luggage carousel. I have never managed to reach the customs hall without an f-word.
For me, it is the cardinal sign that I’ve arrived home. – Yours, etc,
