A chara, – There has recently been a tendency to characterise various movements as monolithic bogeymen of the “far left” or “far right”. To borrow a phrase, we should remind ourselves that Irish political affiliation is far more fluid than that of our British or American neighbours, and these groups are not as cunning nor coordinated as they are credited.
Your average Irishman is a socialist when he needs public services, a communist when he is fired, a liberal artist when he wants to impress a woman, a libertarian when he has to pay taxes, a nationalist when he talks about the British, and a conservative when his daughter starts dating. – Yours, etc,
CONOR MacNAMARA,
London.
