Sir, – The debate on whether Irish citizens living outside the island of Ireland should be allowed to vote in Irish elections should not focus on for what or for whom we might vote if given the opportunity (Geraldine Bird, Thursday, April 13th) but rather on whether we should be entitled to vote at all.
Given the number of Irish passport holders living abroad it would be a travesty of democracy to have many more registered voters living outside the country than within it.
As a citizen, I am an Irish passport holder, I do not live in Ireland, and there is no valid reason whatsoever why I should be in a position to choose the elected representatives of those who do. – Yours, etc,
STEPHEN O’SULLIVAN
