Sir, – The management of Dublin Port plans to expand the port to cater for projected growth in freight in the future (News, April 22nd). The Minister is not happy with its plans as it contains no plan for moving freight by rail, rather than by multitudes of trucks.
Dublin Port management’s remit extends only to the boundaries of Dublin Port. It is not responsible for national policy on transportation. If the Minister wants a rail connection to various rail freight terminals and distribution centres around the country (currently non-existent?), then it is in the Minister’s remit and responsibility for national policy on transport to develop such a national policy and to provide the funding and infrastructure to make the switch to transportation of freight out of Dublin Port by rail both possible and practical. – Yours, etc,
