Sir, – Ted Smyth outlines the level of interest and affection held by Irish-Americans for the State in “Is it time we had some more emigrant Senators?” (Opinion & Analysis, May 9th).
He argues that we might return that love by giving a gift of four seats in the Seanad to be appointed by a “new international panel”.
He suggests there are those among us beating our heads against the wall as this such is a difficult problem to resolve.
It is very simple. A vote is earned by citizens who choose to live here, work here, pay tax here, and by doing so, harvest immeasurable benefits.

Mr Smyth is creating a problem where none exists.
The very idea that Ireland should purchase what he describes as “soft power” as “an expression of love” by relinquishing four seats is ludicrous. – Yours, etc,
