Sir,– You state (An Irishman’s Diary, May 17th) that where the M4 takes a loop around Longford town it becomes the M5.
The N4 joins the N5 at Longford town.
The section of the N4 designated as a motorway ceases 55km closer to Dublin in the townland of Heathstown, Co Westmeath, about 100 metres from the Royal Canal.
A “straight” line drawn from Clifden to just north of Dundalk cleaves the Irish road system in two, with no road of motorway standard to the northwest of this line, as residents of these counties can so readily attest. – Yours, etc,
