Sir, – Sheila Deegan writes: “Most of us were well educated for a modest fee by unpaid religious teachers, nuns, priests and brothers up to 1967, and thereafter free” (Letters, June 3rd).
While it is recognised that religious orders have historically made a huge input into education in Ireland, it is not true that their members were unpaid.
Both before and after 1967 all suitably qualified teachers, both lay and religious, have been paid salaries at the same rate in accordance with the rules and salary scales of the Department of Education. – Yours, etc,
