Sir, – Regarding the recent increases in toll charges on the motorways, may I make an observation?
On the M50, northbound drivers from junction 15 to junction 7, and southbound drivers from junction 1 to junction 6 incur no charges whatsoever. These motorists contribute zero yet benefit from a significant asset.
Isn’t it time to charge the toll relevant to the distance travelled on the M50?
This was the case on the Autostrada in Italy when I and friends enjoyed a wonderful road trip to Italia ‘90.

With this in place, all users will contribute to the upkeep of the roads on a “pro rata” basis. Those opposed to tolls have the option of using other roads, that originally necessitated the need for the “toll” element of our road network.
