Sir, – Further to “Drew Harris describes no confidence vote by GRA as ‘kick in the teeth’ but will not resign” (News, September 13th), it is unsurprising that the poll by the Garda Representative Association (GRA) on confidence in our Garda Commissioner Drew Harris showed the result it did. Drew Harris is a reforming and transforming commissioner who, with his management team, is working to create a Garda force which the citizens of this country and the gardaí could be proud of and have confidence in, after the scandals and abuses in previous years.
Previously gardaí have closed ranks around wrongdoers in the force, been negligent in their duties and ostracised members of the force, the whistleblowers, who were brave enough to call out the negligence, dereliction of duty and wrongdoing within the force.
This no confidence vote in the Garda Commissioner, who is doing his duty on behalf of the citizens of this country, is an effort to prevent the many reforms needed in the force. – Yours, etc,
HUGH McDERMOTT,
Dromahair,
Co Leitrim.
Sir, – How can any leader hope to lead when 84.5 per cent of his force have voiced “no confidence” in him?
It defies logic.
How can any Minister for Justice have any iota of credibility when she affirms “full support” for that leader?
It is beyond reason. – Yours, etc,
NOEL MAUGHAN,
Cork.
