Sir, – I asked myself how we could frivolously spend time and money on World Cup rugby when the world around us is on fire?
My answer is based on the fact that South Africa and Ireland, in particular, are living examples of a form of nationalism that transcends division – examples of people overcoming prejudice and separation, people proud of their countries and all that they stand for playing with every fibre of their being to win.
These are whispers that call us to other ways of peaceful co-existence – South African and Irish rugby give us hope that there is a way through, that negotiation can bring peace and joy. – Yours, etc,
