Sir, – In this newspaper last week, Seán Donlon wrote about the possibility of incoming TDs taking an oath pledging them to reject violence (“Should TDs have to take an oath to reject violence and uphold democratic values?”, Opinion & Analysis, November 2nd).
He was clearly aiming, by his own admission, at the possibility of a large phalanx of Sinn Féin TDs being elected to the next Dáil.
One wonders, if Mary Lou McDonald, when taking such an oath, would decide to follow precedence set by a former party leader and a former taoiseach, and dismiss it as an empty formula. – Yours, etc,
