Sir, – I am very bemused by Owen Keegan’s apparent comments that the impact on traffic is disproportionate and the start and finish area will need to be moved from town (News, November 5th). Surely, having 20,000 participants and their families and friends in the city centre on an otherwise quiet bank holiday Sunday has a “disproportionate” impact on the businesses in the city centre also? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – All major city marathons follow their same route year in and year out. The Dublin marathon is a fantastic event, as witnessed by the thousands upon thousands who come out to support it every year.
Whatever adverse effects Dublin City Council has discovered after 43 years of the event cannot be the same as the adverse effects it would have on businesses if the start/finish area were moved out of the city centre. – Yours, etc,
ALAN FAIRBROTHER,
